On November 3, 2011 the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County had their 47th Annual Gourmet Dinner presented by HONDA at the Balboa Bay Club. There were 360 guests present at the event and they were able to raise $522,000 for the agency’s mentoring programs for at-risk youth. The event featured scotch tasting, a martini bar, live auction, and opportunities to win prizes including an Anaheim Ducks Suite and signed jerseys in opportunity drawings. The event also featured a unique “Chair Auction,” in which guests bid on auction seats and had the chance to go home with valuable items including an Acura TL. The 47th Annual Gourmet Dinner was presented by HONDA and Title Sponsors included the Anaheim Ducks and Honda Center, Auction.com, the Albert J. Crosson Family, Farmers & Merchants Bank, the Share our Wine Foundation. Guests enjoyed wine courtesy of Layer Cake Wines. Tim Ryan, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer for the Anaheim Ducks and President and Chief Executive Officer of Anaheim Arena Management, LLC, was honored with the Joel K. Rubenstein Award for over 11 years of dedication to the children of Orange County. Keith Rhodes CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, thanked Tim for his many years of service: “We are pleased to honor Tim Ryan for the great work he has done to help us change the lives of children in Orange County by matching them with positive role models. As a longtime supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, he has truly made a difference in the lives of thousands of children. The Gourmet Dinner is a longstanding tradition and a fundraising event that is critical in raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters, allowing us to serve more of Orange County’s most vulnerable children – children of single, low-income and incarcerated parents. Thanks to all of our generous supporters of this event, these young people can look forward to brighter futures.” Tim Ryan commented, “I feel fortunate to be part of such a committed group, one that’s dedicated to changing the lives of so many young people through the Big Brothers Big Sisters programs. I also have the privilege of working for Henry and Susan Samueli, who by setting-the-bar for philanthropy in Orange County, allow our organization the ability to be extensively involved in community service.” A highlight of the evening was a testimonial from David Fanous, a Big Brother who has mentored 11 year old Jose for over two years. Fanous shared the difficult childhood that Jose has faced growing up without a father as a “motel kid,” with an unstable home life. He shared that thanks to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, he has seen a tremendous difference in Jose’s performance in school and future aspirations, noting that Jose now hopes to attend college. Jose joined Fanous onstage to a standing ovation from the audience. Funds raised at the 47th Annual Gourmet Dinner support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County’s one-to-one mentoring programs for children of single, low-income and/or incarcerated parents. Longstanding independent research from Public Private Ventures shows that children with a Big Brother or Big Sister are more likely than peers not involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters to: have good school attendance and achievement; avoid negative/illegal behaviors; and have positive relationships with their families and others. In addition, a recent study conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters found that adults mentored as children through Big Brothers Big Sisters are more likely than peers with similar backgrounds but who were not involved in the program to have a four-year college degree and incomes of $75,000 or more. They also reported strong relationships with their spouses, children and friends. Here are some pictures to enjoy from the event: Rudy Baldoni, Gourmet Dinner Chairman and BBBSOC Board Vice Chairman with Title Sponsors: Steve Johnson of the Share our Wine Foundation, Henry Walker of Farmers & Merchants Bank, Steve Morikawa of HONDA, Honoree Tim Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks and Honda Center, Rob Friedman of Auction.com, Tim Crosson of the Albert J. Crosson Family Foundation and BBBSOC CEO Keith Rhodes. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a donor-supported volunteer organization that changes lives. Big Brothers Big Sisters recently earned Philanthropedia’s top ranking on a list of most recommended, high-impact national nonprofits serving at-risk youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters depends on donations to ensure child safety and provide support for children, families and volunteers to build and sustain strong relationships. Big Brothers Big Sisters programs are proven to reduce a child’s risk of dropping out of school, becoming violent, using drugs and alcohol, and falling victim to other negative cycles that threaten our society. In addition to financial support, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County needs male volunteers to become Big Brothers as seventy percent of the children waiting for a “Big” are boys, yet only three in every 10 inquiries about volunteering come from men.
